Organized by National Technical Committee 85 on Fasteners Standardization Administration of China, co-organized by Shanghai Fasteners and Welding Consumables Research Institute, Shenyang Standard Component Research Institute, and undertaken by China Fastener Info, the 6th China Fastener Industry Seminar Series Two – the Cause of High-strength Fasteners Defects and Prevention Measures, was held in China Fastener Industry Training Center on Dec. 26, 2008 following the successful launch of Series One – Technical Specifications of Fastener Standards in Europe and US on Dec. 19-20, 2008.

This course was lectured by Mr. Yan Zhenzhong, senior engineer, who is Deputy Director of Shanghai Xuhui Metallography Heat Treatment Association with nearly 40 years' experience in fastener industry. As a senior engineer who has published several papers in national periodicals such as Modern Components, Railway Standard Design, The 7th National Congress on Heat Treatment, Fastener Quarterly Magazine, etc, Yan has been consultive expert of China Fastener Info since 2006. The course – the correct installation and use of high-strength fasteners, lectured by Yan at the beginning of this year, remains fresh in many trainees' memories. Benefiting from Yan's last course, many trainees specially came again this time. This course attracted over 20 trainees.

Yan explained the following three questions in a simple way: firstly, the main reason why rolled flaw and crack appear; secondly, how to take appropriate measures against defects; thirdly, control defects from several aspects of material, technique, inspection, etc. At the same time, this lecture was occasionally interspersed with some answers for practical questions, including the general material and features of high-strength fasteners, the variety of common defects appearing in material and cause, defects and metal organizational structure, the influence on high-strength fasteners when using the inappropriate heat treatment, the cause and influence of Bainite, the methods to control defects, defects of other heat treatment, etc. The interaction between the teacher and students was pretty good, with the teacher answering questions patiently and students raising questions actively and taking notes in earnest.
Mr. Wang from Wenzhou Jinkelan Standard Parts Co., Ltd., took time out of his busy schedule to participate in this course and felt that the effect was very good, with theory and practical cases in lively class. He also said that he would often come to such courses if time permits. Ms Su from Yangzi Railway Equipment Co., Ltd. was satisfied with Yan's course and learnt a lot of technical knowledge. Mr. Xue, engineer and manager of technical quality department from Shanghai Xupu Fasteners Co., Ltd., expressed that discussing some high-level problems with Mr. Yan, was valuable and beneficial. Mr. Yan was delighted that the general level of the trainees was pretty high and the questions discussed had reached a certain depth.

In addition, Mr. Yan's paper the common defects and cracks in high-strength fasteners will be published in the 16th volume of Fastener Quarterly Magazine published by China Fastener Info. Please pay close attention to it!
The 6th China Fastener Industry Seminar Series Three – Riveting and rivet, will be lectured by Mr. Meng Wugong, senior engineer, on Jan. 9-10, 2009.
